Manhunt Monday Arrest: Hector Luis Martinez

SALINAS, Calif. -- Police have arrested 31-year old Hector Luis Martinez. He was wanted for allegedly stabbing a man in the chest and fleeing.

Martinez turned himself into Paso Robles police on Monday night, said police. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail on charges of attempted homicide.

Officers found a 47-year old victim who had been stabbed in the chest and arm bleeding inside a home Monday morning in Salinas. 

It happened along the 100 block of Capitol Street. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and later flown to a Bay Area hospital for treatment, said police. Officers said the victim's condition was serious, but is in stable condition as of this morning.

Gun Brandished On Pedestrian Upset Driver Didn't Yield

SALINAS, Calif. -- Salinas police said when a pedestrian was upset about a driver not yielding to him, the driver pulled a gun on him.

Offiers said the incident happened on Monday around 8:18 p.m. on W. Alisal Street at Church Street.

The 42-year-old victim was reportedly walking in the crosswalk, when he yelled at a driver for not stopping and yielding to him.

Police said the driver, around 18 years old, made a U-turn, brandished a firearm, then shouted profanities at the pedestrian.

The vehicle, described as a newer model orange VW Beetle, drove away eastbound on W.

More Women Committing Gang-Related Crimes, Police Say

SALINAS, Calif. -- A 14-year-old boy stabbed in the neck by a group of girls Friday is still clinging to life.

The stabbing is being called gang-related. Police said the girls approached the boy's group asking which gang they belonged to.

"We have seen more and more females involved in the gang style of life," said Officer Miguel Cabrera with the Salinas Police Department. "We see this by the numbers increasing."

He said it's a new trend compared to several years ago when women took a more passive role in crimes.

Monterey County Spelling Champion to Compete At National Bee

CHUALAR, Calif- Cecilia Trujillo, an 8th grader at Chualar Union Elementary School, is gearing up to compete at the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee, May 26 through June 1 in Washington, D.C.

Cecilia won the countywide spelling bee in March. Her winning word was paradigm.

The first round, on Tuesday, May 28, will be a written round. All spellers will take the round one test at a pre-assigned time. All spellers will participate in the oral round two and round three on Wednesday, May 29, unless they miss a word. Immediately following the conclusion of round three, Bee officials determine semifinalists on the basis of points earned in the preliminaries.

The semifinal rounds will be broadcast live Thursday, May 30 on ESPN2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the championship finals will broadcast live on ESPN from 5 to 7 p.m. Results from the competition will be posted in real time on May 29 and 30 on www.spellingbee.com
