Salinas Police Warning Public Of Two Scams

SALINAS, Calif. -- The Salinas Police Department is warning the public about two different scams.

The first one targets people by phone offering to sell an iPhone set up with discount calling plans to Mexico. The victim is asked to send $400 for what is expected to be an iPhone set up with "guaranteed " discount calling plans.

Officers said the consumer will then receive a cheap "tracfone" prepaid cellular phone with information regarding calling plans and calling cards to make international calls.

The suspect making the calls is targeting primarily Spanish-speaking consumers.

The second scam usually takes place in a parking lot. The suspect "salesman" stops a consumer in the lot and offers to sell an expensive MTS home theater system that normally sells for several thousand dollars.
