Salinas Man Convicted in Gang Rape

Submitted by kiki jones on Thursday, September 9th, 11:47 am

Nicolas Cimientos, age 30, of Salinas, was found guilty of eight counts of rape. The charges involved the kidnapping and sexual assault of two Soledad women.

On June 3, 2006, the defendant and three other men kidnapped two women from the City of Soledad as they were leaving the Fiesta Days Celebration. Cimientos was the driver of the vehicle used to transport the women from where they were abducted by knife point in the City of Soledad to a field South of Castroville. There the women were repeatedly raped by the four men. After the assault the women were left in the fields when they eventually made their way to a farmhouse 2 miles away where they asked for help.

The investigation which followed was a joint exercise by multiple local law enforcement agencies.

Monterey County Sheriff Deputy David Worden was the first to respond and transported the two victims to the hospital.

Salinas Man Shot While Working

Submitted by Lucero Benitez on Wednesday, September 8th, 5:03 pm

Early morning shooting leaves a business owner in critical condition. It happened at the Super Cakes Bakery on East Alisal Street a little after one Thursday morning.

The owner was there because we are told he opens early for field workers. He is now at a bay area hospital.

Neighboring businesses describe the victim as a "nice" guy who has owned his business for decades and their hope is that he comes back soon.

Super Cakes is a family owned business that's been on Salinas' east side for the past 26 years

The owner was in his store this morning, with his wife, when someone came to the back door. He opened it. They talked and soon after was shot.

"He's really calm. He doesn't go out and tell people stuff, he's just a calm guy," said Norayma Mata who works one store down from where the shooting happened.

Police say a gun lock could've prevented a 6 year old's accidental shooting

Submitted by Lucero Benitez on Wednesday, September 1st, 4:57 pm

Police say a 6 year old boy was shot in the stomach by a shotgun found underneath his parents bed at his home at the Boronda Manor Apartments last night.

"Whether it's accidental or not and there is major bodily harm to a person or death then there could be serious charges filed against these parents," Officer Lalo Villegas said.

Police say a 12 year old accidentally pulled the trigger while trying to take the shotgun away from his 6 year old brother.

Now the parents could face several charges for negligence because police say they did not store the shotgun properly.

"When you own any type of firearm there are legal requirements under the penal code that they are not made accessible to children under the age of 18 years old," said Villegas.

The boys are students in the Santa Rita Union School District.

Woman Tries to Kill her Neighbor

Submitted by Lucero Benitez on Thursday, August 19th, 8:43 am

A woman tried to kill her neighbor after the neighbor's dog bit her daughter. It happened in the 200 block of E.Bolivar St around 8pm on Wednesday.

Macarena Clyburn, 30, was at work when her mother called to inform her a neighbor's dog had bitten her 4 year old daughter.

Clyburn called Police to report the incident. She became upset over the delay in our response and told the dispatcher she would be going to jail tonight.

Clyburn drove to her neighbor's residence and approached the 56 year old victim with a knife. She raised the knife over her head and told the victim she was going to kill her as she brought it down towards her chest.

Somehow, the victim was able to foil the attack and take the knife away. Officers arrived moments afterward and took Clyburn into custody. The dog bite that started this incident was very minor and had not broken the skin.  Clyburn was booked into the County Jail.
