Community Gang Prevention Meeting Tonight in Salinas

Submitted by Brian Tumminelli on Thursday, September 9th, 11:45 am

The public is invited to attend a community meeting tonight in Salinas for a presentation on a draft plan to address and reduce gang violence.

The meeting will be held from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, 85 Maryal Drive in Salinas. Called "Community Dialogue for Change Part II," the session follows a June 24 event at which CASP gathered grass-roots recommendations.

CASP, a coalition of about three dozen government and non-profit organizations and agencies working to reduce youth violence, is partnering with the city to finalize and implement the strategic plan for 2010-2012.

In April and May, 23 citizen gatherings, called "listening sessions," were held in all parts of Salinas. The sessions gathered recommendations on how to create a peaceful city.

Participants were invited from all segments of the community, including students, young people in mentoring programs and senior citizens.

Salinas Arts Festival and Car Show

Submitted by Lucero Benitez on Friday, August 20th, 4:46 pm

Caminos Del Arte announces the 1st annual Salinas Arts Festival & Car Show (SAF) – an event that aims to provide our community with an opportunity to experience the beauty of art in all its forms.   It is the goal of Caminos Del Arte to make sure youth in our community have an opportunity to participate in the arts, particularly in a time when schools and our city have been forced to cut music and art programs. Today, there are not many channels for students - specifically those considered at-risk - to participate in art programs that build on the natural strength of each human being and allow for self-exploration that can be both empowering and therapeutic.

Artist Discusses Sebastian Balch Memorial

Submitted by Matt de Nesnera on Monday, August 9th, 6:21 pm

One year after 4-year-old Sebastian Balch was killed by a drunk driver, Jose Ortiz put the finishing touches on a mural dedicated to the young boy.

In the painting, Sebastian is depicted resting on a cloud, hugging a dog -- named 'Rocky' -- from the daycare he attended in the city.

Ortiz said Sebastian always looked happy in the pictures he used for inspiration for the project: "I saw him hugging a lot, always hugging a person, the dogs, the animals."

He added, "He was a really happy child, you can just see it in his face."

Ortiz wanted to capture this happiness, with Sebastian's young smile on the larger-than-life mural on Willow Street in Salinas.  Now, Ortiz said the boy is always with his loved ones and the community.

"We set him up in the clouds, like he's still among us.  The clouds are very permanent here in Salinas, and they're part of Salinas, so he's part of Salinas," Ortiz explained.
