Good Monday Morning: Salinas siblings baking their way out of recession

As the Salinas Californian informs, the recession, it seems, has been the mother of invention for two Salinas brothers seeking to bake their way into a new career.

Efrain Gomez, 28, a gourmet kitchen store employee, and Michael Gomez, 26, are in the beginning stages of launching Shweet!, a gourmet baked-goods business offering cupcakes, scones, crépes, cakes and all manner of sinfully delicious treats.

Dine Out Seniors: SAKURA’S” BUFFET

"Dine Out Seniors" is  group of Seniors from 62 to 90 and meet every week on a Friday or Saturday for dinner or lunch.  The group was formed in 1997 and members are from Monterey, Salinas and Marina with a total of 25 members presently.  The membership fluctuates as seniors move, get married or pass away.

Businesses: Decorate windows Rodeo Style

The California Rodeo Salinas is bringing back one of the most-loved traditions of Big Week-the window decorating contest. The past two years have seen local participation grow with businesses going above and beyond, showing their western spirit with lively and creative decorations. The Rodeo Association challenges businesses to come up with vintage Rodeo decorations and/or to be Tough Enough to Wear, or display, Pink. Information about Wrangler’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink Campaign is below and the form to enter the window decorating contest is attached. The winner chosen in 2009 for Best Pink Decorations was La Belle Epoque in Old Town Salinas.  Their window incorporated Tough Enough to Wear Pink panels and mannequins dressed in pink. The winner of best Western Decorations was Salinas City Elementary School District office. Their windows featured vintage photos and a timeline of the California Rodeo Salinas’ history.

Italian Restaurant and Nightclub Coming to Oldtown

Salinas has approved renovations to the old Wells Fargo building across from First Awakenings.

The developer Gary Kehoe plans to convert the basement into a nightclub, Italian dining on the ground floor, and the upper level will host business luncheons during the week.

A cafe, bistro and delicatessen are also planned on a parcel of land next to the old bank.

Renovations start Monday.

Old Town Salinas Fun Fact

The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been to Oldtown Salinas. He visited on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, and stopped by Rollick's Coffee Shop.

The Former movie star and Governor got Oldtown buzzing.

The Governor ordered a decaf macchiato and a bran muffin.

The Governor, along with Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue and Monterey County Supervisor Louis Calcagno, sat for a few moments to talk and enjoy their drinks.

It was a great moment for Oldtown Salinas.

Cheeky Spanks Plays Casa Sorrento

Rock band Cheeky Spanks will perform Saturday night at Casa Sorrento Pizzeria in Salinas.

The band plays a wide variety of music from rythum and blues, oldies, classic rock, and modern rock.

There's nothing like good pizza and good music!
