Suspicious package at mall | Business
Workers at the mall discovered a suspicious package in the breezeway leading into Northridge Mall just north of J.C. Pennyey.
After reviewing the surveillance tape, police learned that an adult male entered the breezeway thru the east side of the mall. He very casually placed the item on the ground and immediately walked northbound through the mall and out the west side of Macy's.
The item was a blue cooler type bag that was approximately 2' X 2'. The area around the bag was secured and some stores and access to portions of the mall were blocked.
The Monterey County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad was called in because of the suspicious nature of the suspect, the fact that they had no indication of what was inside the bag, and the interest of public safety. An X-ray was taken and revealed a couple of cylinders and three batteries.
At about 3:30pm, the item was rendered safe and it was determined that the bag most likely contained food, drink and batteries.
Officers were unable to locate the suspect to determine the reasons for his actions. There was no property damage to the mall and soon after the item was rendered safe, the mall returned to normal activities.
