New Appointment For School Trustee

 

Salinas, CA – The Monterey County Board of Education appointed prominent Seaside business leader Mary Claypool to fill the provisional vacancy in Board Trustee Area 6 at a special meeting on November 7.

Trustee Area 6, which is comprised mainly of the cities of Marina, Seaside and Sand City, became vacant on September 12 with the resignation of Byrl Anderson-Smith. The term expires November 2013.

“Education is critical to the health of our nation, state and county. My wish is to ensure all students are offered equal access to an excellent education, and to keep the community informed and engaged. I am passionate about improving the quality and access of education to all students,” stated Claypool on her application.

New Veterans Center for College

SALINAS, Calif.- A new Veterans’ Center at Hartnell College will hold open house on Friday. 

 The public is cordially invited to the grand opening of the Hartnell College Veterans Services Center on Friday, November 9, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The new center is located in the Student Center on the Main Campus in Salinas. The Veterans Center is organized as a one-stop shop for Hartnell student veterans and their families to ease the transition from military service to college and civilian life by offering a relaxing gathering place that provides essential services. The center will offer assistance and updated information on any matter of military veteran benefits, college student services, and transition issues that include academic and social support. The center is also the home to the college veterans club.    

55,000 Lights to Benefit the Homeless

SALINAS, Calif.-      It's an event that will include one of the most dynamic holiday lighting displays ever produced in the Salinas Valley.

 Organizers say the light show will impress, but more importantly, it will benefit the homeless and needy.

Salinas Fire Chief Swearing-In

 

The Salinas Fire Department will be swearing in its new fire chief November 15. 
The public is invited to attend the Swearing-in Ceremony for Fire Chief Edmond A. Rodriguez at 3:00 - 5:00 pm at the National Steinbeck Center, One Main Street Salinas.  In August, Salinas announced its new fire chief. Rodriguez was Stockton's current deputy fire chief. He took the helm in September. He'lll get nearly $190,000, but that includes a 13 percent reduction fire unions negotiated with the city. He brings more than 26 years of firefighting experience.  The last fire chief, Kim Raddatz, was hired in April 2009, only to leave a year later.

Salinas, CA – Salinas City Councilman, Steve McShane, announced a “CITY OF SALINAS COMMUNITY FORUM” planned for THIS Thursday, May 10th at 5:30PM, Salinas City Hall Rotunda – 200 Lincoln Ave., Salinas CA 93901 today.

 

There has been a growing amount of anxiety and attention from Salinas Residents on the recent announcement for Capital One to leave Salinas by June of 2013.  This meeting will allow for a Community response and discussion on the topic.  Officials from the City of Salinas, Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, Oldtown Salinas Association and the County of Monterey One Stop Career Center will be on hand.  Various reports of what has taken place and the immediate response plan from the
