Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Gang Violence Solutions

Castroville, Calif.- A reminder that the second in a series of community meetings on preventing gang violence in Monterey County will take place today, Wednesday, May 8th at 6:00 p.m. at the Japanese School House in Castroville, 11199 Geil Street.  

A community meeting for Salinas area residents will take place the next evening, May 9th, at 6:00 p.m.

Students To Compete In Special Olympics

Students from the Monterey County Office of Education and from districts throughout Monterey County will participate in the annual Special Olympics of Northern California Track and Field Day Event on Friday, April 19 from 9:30 a.m. to early afternoon at North Salinas High School located at 55 Kip Drive in Salinas.

Opening ceremony will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. followed by the parade of student athletes around the track. Schools and students will compete in a variety of events, including the ball throw, standing long jump, turbo javelin, and multiple wheel chair races and running events throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Special Olympics Northern California provides athletic opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, instilling the confidence they need to succeed in life.

Event Planned To Replace Burned Books At Steinbeck Library

SALINAS, Calif. - Friends of the Salinas Public Library will be holding an event to help replace the books that were destroyed in a fire at the John Steinbeck Library in March.

The special event and book sale will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Steinbeck Library, which is located at 350 Lincoln Avenue.

Salinas Fire Chief Ed Rodriguez will read a story in the children's section at 11 a.m. Snappy will make a special appearance, and a fire truck and attendants will be on hand to promote fire safety.

Special book sale tables and carts will be outdoors, and free refreshments will be served in the Friends Bookshop.

Organizers say all book sale proceeds from this event will contribute to replacing books lost in the fire.

Firefighters say the fire started in the bushes outside the library, eventually spreading to the building. It caused about $35,000 in damage.
