Radicchio More Common in Salads

Radicchio More Common in Salads

Michelangelo and oil paint. Beethoven and the piano. Salad makers and radicchio. Every artist has a signature tool for creating masterpieces. This sassy Italian redhead's arrival on the American salad scene is a sign that we're ready for bigger, bolder flavors.

The assertive flavor of radicchio, once only the darling of cutting-edge chefs, has penetrated the US salad market. No longer an "adult" ingredient, it is showing up in salads from McDonald's to the salad blends in the produce aisle. Blending it with other, milder greens and lettuces has made radicchio an everyday player in salads everywhere.

Now, American ingenuity in the kitchen is taking radicchio beyond the traditional tossed salad.

Keeping Repeat DUI Offenders Off The Roads

SALINAS, Calif--The numbers are startling.  According to the Attorney General's Office, nearly 14,000 people were arrested in Monterey County back in 2008 for misdemeanor DUI.  Another 337 were felony DUI arrests.  Officers with the California Highway Patrol say those numbers are frustrating.

"Very much so," says Officer Robert Lehman, CHP.  "Especially when we see anybody get hurt.  Anybody get killed.  Even more so when it's an innocent party."

The problem though is keeping those drivers off the roads.  After your first offense, your license can be suspended for six months.  Second offense, two year license suspension.  Third offense, three years suspension.  At four years, that's when it becomes a felony, and your license is suspended for up to four years.  Officers and District Attorney's say that's not keeping drivers off the roads.

Many surgeons have contemplated suicide, study finds

A new study finds that as many as one in 16 U.S. surgeons harbored suicidal thoughts in the previous year, but few sought help from a mental-health professional.

Researchers analyzed surveys completed by 7,905 members of the American College of Surgeons in 2008 and found that 501 (6.3 percent) said they had thought about suicide within the past year.

Surgeons more likely to report suicidal thoughts included those who were aged 45 and older; they were 1.5 to three times more likely to have such thoughts than people in the general population. Divorced surgeons also had a higher risk. Being married and having children was associated with a lower risk, the study found.
