Keeping Gangsters Out of City Parks

SALINAS, Calif.- Leadership Salinas Valley Class 30 is teaming up with the City Parks and Recreation Department and the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation to infuse new life into Central Park. A concept first proposed by Councilmember Steven McShane, garden enthusiasts will improve the quality of the park, offer a wholesome and educational activity to residents, as well as promote the agricultural roots that are so important to the Salinas Valley.

The Central Park Community Garden project will create an area where residents can participate in horticulture, plant cultivation, and small volume crop production.

Increase In Home Sales May Be Causing High Enrollment

More than 8,000 students are enrolled in the Alisal Union School District, that's over 400 more than they expected.

Realtors say more people are buying homes in East Salinas which may be filling up Alisal school district schools.

Housing Services Center Saves Man's Home From Foreclosure

According, to foreclosure radar.com, in April, Monterey County saw 1,047 homes go into foreclosure, and another 1,070 homes go into pre-foreclosure.  IN fact, 32 percent of Monterey County homeowners received default notices in May.  The economy isn't just hurting a certain group of homeowners.  As a matter of fact one couple we talked who lives in Del Rey Oaks has owned this home for years, and it's been in the family since the 1960s.

"This house means everything to us.  It was a total traumatic feeling.  It was like coming to the realization that you could lose your home," said homeowner Rougeau McWhorter.

Rougeau McWhorter recounts the stressful moments he almost lost his house.  The poor economy forced his family business to close its doors in Salinas after 10 years.  Without his business, McWhorter struggled to pay his mortgage.

"The minute things started defaulting, they came out of their woodwork.

Celebrate National Cheese Lover's Day January 20, 2011

MONTEREY, CA  (January 1, 2010)  Royal Rose Radicchio of Salinas, Calif. is celebrating National Cheese Lover’s Day (held every January 20th) with radicchio recipes and pairing suggestions.

The increasingly sophisticated American palate has discovered the strengths of radicchio — its alluring color, satisfying bitterness, and refreshing crunch. Nothing compliments the complexity of this Italian chicory better than a rich cheese; like spaghetti and meatballs, radicchio and cheese belong together. Great chefs have long known that we begin the dining experience first with our eyes, and radicchio holds great visual appeal, with its vibrant, wine-colored leaves that brighten any dish. Then comes mouth-feel, and few foods can match this versatile vegetable’s texture that lends a cool, refreshing crispness to the plate.
