Public Meeting Planned To Tackle New Police Tax

SALINAS, Calif.- The lines in the sand are already starting to develop surrounding a possible tax to build a police station and hire more officers in Salinas, according to one Salinas city council member. 

A Community Meeting is planned with the Salinas Chief of Police to better understand the gravity of the situation, according to council member Steve McShane.

The Committee of Salinas Residents supports funding more police officers and building a new police station. It has planned a Community Meeting for Monday, April 29th at 6:00PM, 2013 at Temple Beth El Church – 1212 Riker St., Salinas CA 93901.

The committee consists of a broad base of supporters including leadership from the recently successful Measure E Committee along with folks from business, labor, neighborhood associations and taxpayer groups.

Salinas Workers March For Immigration Reform

  SALINAS, Calif.- Thousands in Salinas are expected to join United Farm Workers in a march for immigration reform and celebration of Cesar E. Chavez's legacy this coming weekend. Families affected by current immigration laws, farm workers and community leaders will march Sunday, March 24 at 11 a.m. in a continuing effort to urge lawmakers to pass a new immigration process that would allow the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. to legalize their status. Thousands of people are expected to participate in the march for immigration reform and to honor the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers of America. Chavez's birthday is a holiday celebrated in eight states across the nation on March 31st, including California.

Salinas Mayor Will Say Goodbye

 

Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue will say goodbye to serving as the city's Mayor. He was first elected Mayor on November 7, 2006 for two-year term-of-office. 

Donohue's farewell address will take place on Friday, Dec. 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Maya Cinemas, 153 Main Street, Salinas.

New Appointment For School Trustee

 

Salinas, CA – The Monterey County Board of Education appointed prominent Seaside business leader Mary Claypool to fill the provisional vacancy in Board Trustee Area 6 at a special meeting on November 7.

Trustee Area 6, which is comprised mainly of the cities of Marina, Seaside and Sand City, became vacant on September 12 with the resignation of Byrl Anderson-Smith. The term expires November 2013.

“Education is critical to the health of our nation, state and county. My wish is to ensure all students are offered equal access to an excellent education, and to keep the community informed and engaged. I am passionate about improving the quality and access of education to all students,” stated Claypool on her application.

Salinas Fire Chief Swearing-In

 

The Salinas Fire Department will be swearing in its new fire chief November 15. 
The public is invited to attend the Swearing-in Ceremony for Fire Chief Edmond A. Rodriguez at 3:00 - 5:00 pm at the National Steinbeck Center, One Main Street Salinas.  In August, Salinas announced its new fire chief. Rodriguez was Stockton's current deputy fire chief. He took the helm in September. He'lll get nearly $190,000, but that includes a 13 percent reduction fire unions negotiated with the city. He brings more than 26 years of firefighting experience.  The last fire chief, Kim Raddatz, was hired in April 2009, only to leave a year later.
