Mock City Trial on April 22, 2013 held by The Salinas Youth Commission

On April 22, 2012, The Salinas Youth Commission are having a mock city council meeting with the subject of a seperate police tax for discussion. All public welcome to attend and comment on the subject matter.

Location: Rotunda at City Hall in Salinas

Students To Compete In Special Olympics

Students from the Monterey County Office of Education and from districts throughout Monterey County will participate in the annual Special Olympics of Northern California Track and Field Day Event on Friday, April 19 from 9:30 a.m. to early afternoon at North Salinas High School located at 55 Kip Drive in Salinas.

Opening ceremony will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. followed by the parade of student athletes around the track. Schools and students will compete in a variety of events, including the ball throw, standing long jump, turbo javelin, and multiple wheel chair races and running events throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Special Olympics Northern California provides athletic opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, instilling the confidence they need to succeed in life.

 

 

 


 

Workshop To Help Migrant Parents With Education

More than 300 migrant parents from throughout Monterey County have been invited to participate in the La Familia Conference on Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Hartnell Community College located at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas.

According to a news release, "The conference is a unique opportunity for migrant parents to engage and learn parenting strategies and information regarding the upbringing and education of their children. The conference directly supports the ultimate goal of the Migrant Education Program which is to ensure that all migrant students experience a high quality education and improved way of life" said Dr. Ernesto Vela, Program Director II, Monterey County Office of Education, Migrant Education Program, Region XVI.

Students Get Ready To S-P-E-L-L

SALINAS, Calif.-  Students from schools throughout Monterey County will assemble at Hartnell College’s Western Stage Theatre on Sunday, March 17 to test their spelling knowledge.

In a news release, promoters said the students will attempt to spell their way to the grand prize of a trip to the Washington, D.C. area, to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 28 – 30, 2013. The competition promises to be fierce this year as the best middle school spellers in Monterey County compete at the 19th annual Countywide Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Monterey County Office of Education and community partners. Top honors will be awarded at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Visually Impaired Students Place at Regional Braille Challenge

Salinas, CA – Students of the Monterey County Office of Education Program for the Visually Impaired competed on Saturday, March 2 in the Regional Braille Challenge held at California School for the Blind in Fremont.

Students competed in the areas of spelling, reading comprehension, dictation and interpretation of tactile graphics during the all-day competition.

“We're extremely proud of our Monterey County students and staff," said Martina Sholiton, Assistant Superintendent, Special Education, Monterey County Office of Education. "Our students have had many wins in the Regional Braille Challenges in past years. Two of our students, Janie Brunson and Monserath Espinola, have scored high enough to compete against top winners in the National Braille Challenge."

Monterey County Organization Reaches Milestone

It's a new year and 2013 marks the 45th Anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County.

In a news release, staff said it's an incredible testimony to the vision and commitment of this community to serve children.


The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County started out in a small house in 1968 with just 10 kids. Now, after 45 years of service, it's bigger and better than ever.

There are two clubhouses and three extension sites serving almost 1,000 kids daily, more children than ever are benefitting from having a safe haven where they can learn, grow and have fun. 
 

Local CHP Preparing for Next Class to Teach Teen Driver Safety

SALINAS, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol is teaching "Start Smart" in an effort to reduce the number of collisions and injuries involving teen drivers. 

The next class is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16th at 6:00 p.m. and will be held at the CHP Monterey Area office, which is located at 960 E. Blanco Road, Salinas.  The Class is free of charge and parents/guardians are asked to attend with their teenage driver.

Motor vehicle collisions nationwide are the leading cause of death for teenage drivers. California has the second highest fatality rate involving drivers between the ages of 15-20.  "This tragic loss of young lives is a concern to us, and we hope this program can reduce the death toll," stated CHP Captain William Perlstein.
