MST Service Changes to Go into Effect on May 25th

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif- There will be several service changes for the Monterey-Salinas Transit bus lines. Some of the bus lines have been eliminated all togeher while others have major changes, announced the MST in a news release.

Local CHP Preparing for Next Class to Teach Teen Driver Safety

SALINAS, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol is teaching "Start Smart" in an effort to reduce the number of collisions and injuries involving teen drivers. 

The next class is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16th at 6:00 p.m. and will be held at the CHP Monterey Area office, which is located at 960 E. Blanco Road, Salinas.  The Class is free of charge and parents/guardians are asked to attend with their teenage driver.

Motor vehicle collisions nationwide are the leading cause of death for teenage drivers. California has the second highest fatality rate involving drivers between the ages of 15-20.  "This tragic loss of young lives is a concern to us, and we hope this program can reduce the death toll," stated CHP Captain William Perlstein.           

More Highway 68 Roadwork

Caltrans will begin grinding and paving a seven-mile section of Highway 68 from the Highway 1 interchange to SPCA Road on Monday, July 30.

 

Roadwork will be done during overnight hours and is expected to be completed this fall.

 

In areas where the roadway is four lanes, at least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times.

 

Roadwork hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 7 pm to 6 am; Fridays from 1 am to 6 am, and Sundays from 8 pm to midnight.

 

In areas where there is only one lane in each direction, the same schedule will apply except on Sundays, when work will occur between 10 pm and midnight.

 

Electronic message signs will be posted to advise motorists, who can expect 15-20 minute delays.

New Route for Salinas Drivers

SALINAS, Calif.- It was an expensive and much-needed project to upgrade and construct a whole new Airport Boulevard Interchange in Salinas for the thousands of trucks and drivers that use that route every day.

On Thursday, the Congressman Sam Farr joined Caltrans, the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), and the City of Salinas to celebrate the completion of the new $24.4 million Airport Boulevard Interchange with a ribbon-cutting event held at the Salinas Municipal Airport.                         

"Facilitating the movement of goods is critical to supporting our local economy and central to the success of our agriculture industry," said Congressman Farr in a news release.

Donation for students amid budget cuts

Monterey County schools will get a donation to offset cuts to field trip transportation budgets.

Schools like Cesar Chavez Elementary, Chualar Union Elementary, Marina Vista, Monterey Bay Charter School and Prunedale Elementary are some of the schools getting a chunk of the money to take students to explore a piece of history.

The Monterey County Office of Education partnered with the California Missions Foundation to offer financial assistance to 15 Title 1 elementary schools this year to take 4th graders to the missions of San Antonio and San Juan Bautista.

“Mission field trips are cornerstones of the 4th grade education experience. It’s an opportunity for students to conduct their first research project and develop their critical thinking skills while learning about the beginnings of California.

Major Road Closures Start Monday In Downtown Salinas

There are some major scheduled road and lane closures for the areas between Salinas and North Monterey County from today until Sunday, September 19th.

  • Highway 68 connector to southbound Highway 1: (September 12) Caltrans will close the westbound  Hwy. 68 connector to southbound Hwy. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, September 12.
  • Caltrans will close the Hwy 1 off ramp to Hwy 68 eastbound from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.   There will be a detour to southbound Hwy 1 via the Casa Verde off ramp.
  • Highway 1 to Highway 68: September 13 - 15: Caltrans will close the Hwy 1 off ramp to Hwy 68 eastbound AND the westbound Hwy 68 connector to southbound Hwy 1 overnight from Tuesday, September 13, through Thursday, September 15. o   This closure will only be at night, between the hours of 8 p.m.

Traffic Alert: Construction for the week of August 7th

The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC)  has released the following schedule for road construction and maintenance.

 

Highway 68: August 7 – August 12

 

Caltrans will be striping and marking on Highway 68 in Monterey – from west of SPCA Road to west of San Benancio Road; and from east of San Benancio Road to west of Reservation Road. This work will result in nighttime single lane closures and rolling lane closures on Hwy 68 from:

  • 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. on Sunday, August 7
  • 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. on August 8, 9, and 10

Monterey County Public Works continues its work along Hwy 68 and San Benancio, which will go on until December 2011. This work is being done during the day; drivers should be alert.
