Families Mourn Loss of Teens Killed in Crash

On Sunday, more flowers and wooden crosses were at the site of where two Salinas High teens, Genevieve Giammanco and Bella Dakis, died in a car crash late Friday night. The crash happened on River Road and Las Palmas Parkway.

  The families and entire Salinas community are still mourning the losses. Both of these girls came from tight-knit families. They were very well-liked, touched so many people's lives and had high hopes for the future.
"Lucky that I had her for 17 years," says Vicenzo Giammanco. "She's my little sister. I taught her everything I knew."   Giammanco can't believe his only sister, Genevieve, is gone.   "She's just 17," says Giammanco. "She's a little girl. She had the world in front of her.

Discounted Bicycle Checks

Local bike shops have partnered with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County to offer discounted bicycle safety checks and minor tunes up between April 1st and May 16th to prepare bicyclists for a safe and fun bike week. The Monterey County Bike Week event, now in its 16th year, is a weeklong series of events promoting bicycling as a healthy transportation alternative that reduces traffic and air pollution. Bike Week occurs May 10-16th.

The bicycle assessment includes tire inflation, chain lubrication, safety checks and recommendations for a discounted price of $10. The evaluation generally takes ten to fifteen minutes.

Avoid Traffic Congestion

Possible Traffic Congestion and Road Closures for a planned event at the Salinas Sports Complex near the intersection of N. Main St. and W. Laurel Dr. on Sunday March 14, 2010,

The Salinas Police Department is expecting heavy traffic congestion and possible road closures in that area between the hours of 4:00 pm and 10:00 pm. Community members not wanting to encounter traffic congestion are encouraged to take an alternate route of travel.

Mother and Son Injured Walking to School

A 36 year-old woman and her 11 year-old son was walking to University Park School when the were both hit by a car.

Police say that they were crossing the street outside of the crosswalk and walked into the path of a car driving westbound on University.

The 11-year-old sustained a compound fracture to his leg and the mother sustained neck and back injuries. Both were transported to SVMH for treatment.

Their current medical status is unknown.

Tickets for Parking in the Driveway

A Central Coast News viewer wrote in and told us on January 24th police ticketed about a dozen cars parked in driveways. You wanted to know why, so we went to the North Salinas neighborhood and talked with Police.

Cora Montoya and her husband have lived on Parsons Avenue in North Salinas for 30 years. On January 24th they got two tickets because cars in their driveway blocked the sidewalk, "The city of Salinas allowed these kinds of houses to be built.

School Bus Accident Sends 3 kids to Hospital

3 kids were sent to the hospital for precautionary reasons after an SUV collided with a school bus on East Bernal.

The bus was carrying 32 kids from Natividad Elementary.

Police say the driver of the SUV was hearing impaired, but did have a valid license.

The rest of the children were picked up by parents or taken home on a replacement bus.

Road closure at Blanco Rd

Blanco Road was closed for nearly an hour on Monday morning after a car hit a pole.

A Salinas man said he was driving from Monterey when he lost control hitting the pole because of the wind and rain.

It happened at around 11am. The road was closed between Armstrong and Hitchcock Rd.

CHP reminds everyone to drive with extra caution during the storm.
