Pinnacles Back On The Legislative Table

Pinnacles Back On The Legislative Table

According to a news release issued this week by the Wilderness Society, county officials and supporters are applauding Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) for reintroducing a bill that would upgrade Pinnacles National Monument to a National Park.

The Senator’s legislation – co-sponsored by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) – will further protect Pinnacles’ unique lands and its new National Park status would boost tourism to the area.

If enacted, the bill would also expand the 16,000 acres of Pinnacles Wilderness by an additional 2,715 acres.

Revitalizing Salinas' Central Park Arboretum

A group of volunteers spent their Saturday helping spruce up Central Park, near Hartnell College, in Salinas.  About 25 volunteers worked to plant nine new trees, and put signage on nearly 20 others.

The park used to be a regular stop for school groups to explore the indigenous trees in California.  Over the years, trees died and the signage had been destroyed.

The Leadership Salinas Valley Class 28 took on the revitalization of the park as a project.  Shannon Graham, Julie Ducoing, Saul Zamora, Amit Pandya and Paul Dughi from the class spearheaded the fundraising and organized the project.

SPCA Rescues Barnyard Owl

The SPCA was called out to rescue a barnyard owl tangled in fishing line.

The owl was upside down in the backyard on El Paso Road in Salinas.

The SPCA said the rescue went smoothly, and they are going to monitor the animal because it was favoring the injured wing.

They hope to release the animal back into the wild soon.
